2023 Scholarship & Funding Assistance Award Recipients

 

A huge congratulations to all of this years award recipients. We are extremly proud of all your efforts in furthering your education and participation in continuing to develop youth projects in and the Santiam Canyon area. We proudly recognize all of our 2023 winners!

Scholarship Award Recipients – Scholarship Awards - $18,500
 

Santiam High School

Ashton Saari – Ashton plans to study mechanical engineering and aerospace or automotive engineering at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. His future plans also include joining the Air Force ROTC and spending two years abroad on a mission for his church.

Kielynn Thurston – Pacific Power Foundation Scholarship recipient. Kielynn plans to attend Eastern Oregon University where she will study nursing with a goal of working in either the emergency room or the neonatal intensive care unit. She is an avid softball player and active in her church and community.

Parker Hannah – Parker has been accepted to Oregon State University where he will study mechanical engineering. His plans include joining Air Force ROTC and then serving in the Space Force or as a pilot following graduation. Parker was active in track and field throughout high school.

Kristin Taylor – Kristin plans to attend Oregon State University and study mechanical and aerospace engineering. She hopes this will allow her to combine her love of flying with her passion for the development of new science and technology. As a member of the Experimental Aircraft association 292, at the Independence State Airport, she has already begun working with engineers from such companies as Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin as well as NASA.

Emma Longfellow – Anita Leach Memorial Scholarship recipient. Emma plans to attend Oregon State University where she will study agricultural science with a major in soil science. Her goal is to be an agronomist. She has a passion for discus throwing and would like to continue participating in track and field events as well as student government.

Katelynn Ward – Katelynn plans to become a pharmacy technician and work in a pharmacy. She has been active in sports throughout high school participating in basketball, volleyball and track and field.

Sean Brewster – Sean’s passion is sports, particularly football, and his goal is to attend George Fox College and eventually join the National Football League.

 

Regis High School

Aidan Klascius – Aidan is passionate about computers and has built several for himself and his friends. He plans to pursue a career in computer engineering. He is active in track and field, particularly cross country and pole vaulting. He enjoys theater, having been cast in eight high school productions.

 

Stayton High School

Hope Bridge – Pacific Power Foundation Scholarship recipient. Hope’s goal is to earn a degree in biology and then attend medical school to become a neurosurgeon. She was valedictorian of her senior class, graduating with a 4.0 GPA. She is active in track and field, excelling at cross country running, and holds the school’s record for the 5K race.

Liam Rutherford – Liam plans to attend Chemeketa Community College with the goal of becoming an electrician. Although he excelled academically in high school, the trades appeal to him because he enjoys being active and solving problems. He is a musician and participated in the Stayton High Symphonic Band and Jazz Band. He also plays soccer and tennis.

Addison Winstead – Addison’s plans include attending Chemeketa Community College and then Oregon State University to get her degrees in early childhood education. She is passionate about working with young children to help them reach their full potential.

Tristen Phillips – Tristen plans to attend Oregon State University as a zoology major with the ultimate goal of becoming a veterinarian. Her greatest joy is interacting with animals and nature. Eventually, she would like to travel and work overseas hosting spay and neuter clinics to reduce the population of stray cats and dogs.

Laurel Ann Bjornstedt – Laurel plans to pursue a degree in mathematics education at Utah State University. After graduation she would like to join the Peace Corps as a way to see the world and contribute to the community and world. She was active in high school sports including golf and basketball and raised goats for 4-H.

 



Community Award Recipients – Funding Grants - $17,000
 

Lyons Public Library – Hosts reading and other activities, such as crafts and entertainment, for children to encourage reading during the summer months.

Santiam International Club  – Provides scholarships to help students pay for international travel to Costa Rica.

Santiam Canyon Parent Teacher Organization – Helps offset the cost of having Missoula Children’s Theater come to Mill City for two weeks. Approximately 29 local children have the opportunity to participate in two live theater performances.

Santiam Kids and Tourism Effort (SKATE) – Received funds to help organize and plan additional fundraising activities for a skatepark in Mill City.

Mill City-Gates Recreation Association – Provides funding for scholarships and equipment so local children can participate in team sports.

Diamondback 4-H – Purchase equipment and supplies for 4-H members to support their efforts in raising animals to show in the Linn County Fair.

Santiam Music Program – Purchase instruments for the Santiam Canyon School District band program.
